Humility

In today's culture, if you promote yourself, you get more press, more advancements, more money, and more fame. However, God values humility and sacrificially putting others first.

"Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for 'God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you (1 Peter 5:5b-7)."

John Calvin said, "We ought to dwell on this thought, that God cares for us, in order, first, that we may have peace within; and, secondly, that we may be humble and meek toward men."

St. Augustine adds, "Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility."

What does humility look like in 2010? Please share your story. Do you have an experience where you saw humility in action? I will appreciate all responses!

  1. Something we've learned in Celebrate Recovery that is very simply put but really deep in meaning is this: "If you think you're humble, you aren't".

One example - if you open a door for someone expecting them to say thank you, you aren't opening it for the right reason...

I see humility in action every Friday night when a bunch of honest and brave people come to CR to try to heal from life's hurts, habits and hang-ups. We humble ourselves before God and before our small groups and accountability partners at every gathering. We openly discuss our "junk n the trunk" that many of us have kept hidden for decades, and that is not easy to do.

But this type of humility helps us all to heal from life's wounds through the grace of Jesus Christ...
